PVC patches are moulded from soft, flexible rubber rather than stitched from thread. Your artwork is cut into a metal mould, liquid PVC is layered in colour by colour, and the patch is cured into a single solid piece.
That construction is why they behave so differently from embroidered patches. There are no threads to fray, no fabric to absorb water, and no stitch count limiting how fine your detail can be. A logo with thin lines or small lettering that would turn muddy in embroidery comes out crisp in PVC.
The trade-off is feel. PVC has a smooth, slightly rubbery surface with no texture. If you want the classic stitched look, embroidered or woven is the better fit. If you need something that survives rain, mud, sun and repeated washing without degrading, PVC is what you are after.

Every PVC patch needs a backing, and it decides how the patch attaches — and whether it comes off again.
Velcro (hook & loop) is the usual pick for tactical gear, letting you swap patches between vests without tools. Heat seal bonds permanently with an iron or heat press. Sew on gives the strongest hold for heavy fabrics and high-wash items. Peel & stick suits short-term event use, while plastic and non-woven backings add structure and stop the patch curling.
